Motorcycle Theory Test

The motorcycle theory test is a crucial part of getting a UK motorcycle licence. Even if you have a driving licence, this test needs to be passed before you can take your practical motorcycle licence tests. You can take the theory test before or after your compulsory basic training. However, you must be at least 16 years old and have a provisional driving licence (or full driving licence) to book your motorcycle theory test.

There are 2 parts to the test:

• multiple-choice questions
• hazard perception – a video test about spotting hazards on the road.

You’ll have to book each element together and take them as a single test. You must pass both parts to pass the test.

You have to have completed both a CBT and Theory test before the 2 practical tests for a full motorcycle licence.

Before you start

You can book, and take, full licence training without having completed the theory test. However, you will need to pass the theory test before you can take the practical test for a UK motorcycle licence. So, it’s advisable to get the theory test out of the way before booking the Mod 1 and Mod 2 practical tests.

You must have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months before taking your theory or driving test.

The DVSA takes bookings for the theory test online and it is easy to arrange to take these in your own time. Check for the nearest theory test centre with the DVSA and make sure they offer motorcycle theory tests along with driving theory tests – not all centres offer both.
