What is advanced training and the DVSA Enhanced Rider Scheme?
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) enhanced rider scheme checks your motorcycle riding skills and provides training to help you improve. The scheme can help you:
- become a safer rider
- develop your motorcycling skills
After successful completion of the scheme, you’ll get a ‘DVSA certificate of competence’. You can use this to get discounts with most motorcycle insurers.
DVSA enhanced training scheme is particularly suitable for you if you have just passed your test, are returning to riding after a break, upgrading to a more powerful motorcycle, or simply want to check your riding standard.
What does the training look like
The training session is one-to-one and centred as much as possible on your individual development needs.
After a short briefing, we will go for a 60-to-90-minute assessment ride. I will aim to identify what you’re good at, and what you might need to brush up on. The ride will cover a variety of road and traffic conditions, but first and foremost, will be fun and enjoyable – expect some very nice biking roads through Shropshire and Wales.
The assessment ride gives us both time to identify any areas you can improve on. There are 7 “core modules” to cover in the ERS course:
- structured planned approach to riding
- defensive riding and hazard awareness
- progress and use of speed
- overtaking and filtering
- bends and corners
- slow control
- developing the correct rider attitude
After the ride, we will have an informal debrief over teas/coffees, discussing some important “theory” first, but mostly focussing on your ride.
If we establish that you need more training to reach the ERS standard, we will develop a training plan together, fitting it around your schedule. Depending on what you need, we might be able to complete it on the day. Alternatively, we will schedule one or more separate sessions, possibly with some “homework” in between.
Once you’ve completed the training and achieved the required standard, you’ll get a DVSA certificate of competence.

My name is Andrzej (Andy) Ostrowski, and I am your DVSA accredited ERS trainer.
I have always wanted to ride motorcycles but have not found an opportunity to learn it until my early forties. I got hooked up from the day I did my CBT. After obtaining my category A licence, I did the ERS course, which helped me greatly to improve my confidence as a rider. A few years later I went on to pass IAM advanced motorcycle test, followed by RoSPA. Recently I decided to qualify as an ERS trainer to gain an opportunity to pass on what I have learned.
As I have a successful professional career, I am not doing this for money, but instead for satisfaction of being able to share my learning experiences with other like-minded riders. I look forward to working together with you and helping you become a better, more confident and safer rider.
